Understanding Bankroll

Ronald Norris

The purpose of this article is to explain the bankroll concept and answer probably the most important financial question: how much money should a Texas Holdem beginner invest to succeed? Indeed this is an important question and it has two simple answers.

If you are new to Texas Holdem or just look for fun, then you shouldn’t invest more than it is “fun? for you to lose. Hence, if you feel comfortable wasting $100 for any other entertainment every weekend – put in that hundred bucks and enjoy your play regardless of the result. That’s how I did, when just started playing Texas Holdem. My initial monthly bankroll was just $150, but I’ve managed to build it up to into what I have today.

Certain bankroll considerations may differ for a seasoned Texas Holdem player, who has already proven himself a winner. Seasoned players are players, who look for consistently making money at a certain limit. If you think you’re a seasoned player, then your bankroll must afford at least 200 big bets at the limit you play, which means that you shall need to have $800 for a $2/$4 Limit Texas Holdem game ($4 times 200). This scheme helps preventing you from getting down-and-out because of a possible bad run.

Some Texas Holdem guides state that such bankroll is rather shallow for shorthand, but I honestly believe that this sum is quite reasonable in comparison to potential losses – you don’t want to risk more than 200 big bets, unless you have proven that you do well at the given limit.

Another good idea is to keep track of your sessions, which helps to determine whether you’re a winning or a losing Texas Holdem player and what is your wins-to-losses percentage. This is also helpful to calculate taxes, if you’re a citizen of a country with income tax on gambling winnings.
