Good starting hands in Texas Holdem

By Ronald Norris

Understanding Good Starting Hands is probably the most important basic skill of a successful Texas Holdem player. This means that you must be able to decide which pocket cards are worth to be called and which ones must be folded preflop. Although the exact answer in each particular situation depends on type of the game (Limit, No-Limit or Pot-Limit Texas Holdem) as well as the number of players at the table, use this general guide for the beginners. As soon as you will understand the principles of choosing good starting hands you will try different variants and finally build your own strategy perfectly matching your style of play. If you’re a beginner, I strongly recommend you to start with $1/$2 or lower Fixed-Limit Texas Holdem tables.

Good starting hands to raise with in Fixed-Limit Texas Holdem games :

AsAh KsKh QsQh AsKh
JsJh AsQh TsTh

Premium starting hands that you want to hit the pot with preflop:

AcJd KcQd KcJd QcJd JcTd
Ts9s
(T9 suited)
9c9d 8c8d 7c7d As7s
(Ax suited)
